How do you use evening primrose oil?

I am 36 weeks and have been having contractions for weeks now. I am miserable and am 2 cm dilated and the doctor said I was allowed to try some at home induction methods. How do you use Evening primrose oil and how fast does it work?

How do you use evening primrose oil?
Evening primrose oil is not generally used for labor induction. I was instructed to use it by my midwives beginning at 36 weeks to 'prepare' the cervix by softening it and thinning it. I used evening primrose oil this way (4 babies!) : 36 or 37 weeks take orally twice per day, 38+ weeks take orally 3 times per day and insert 2 capsules vaginally at bedtime (get them as close to the cervix as you can). I have never heard of anyone going into labor as a result of using evening primrose oil, but using it consistantly during the last weeks of your pregnancy may make your labor come sooner (and be faster) than it would be otherwise. Evening Primrose Oil can be purchased at health food stores, pharmacies, and supermarkets for about 5-10 $ a bottle. Good luck!
Reply:You might not want to take herbs to start labor. These are NOT tested or approved by the FDA and can be harmful to your baby. If your doctor told you it was okay to take it, I would get another doctor.
Reply:Caplet form only.
Reply:You can get it in a pill but its not the safest way to go into labor. Some times it doesnt even work.... So its the chance you will have to take. Walking is really the best thing i did alot of walking my child still came ut 2 days later theh expected..... but walking helped
Reply:I've only heard of evening primrose oil for use in the help of PMS symptoms and reduction of cramping. I tried researching the web quick and didn't really find any over the counter induction methods as far as a medication or supplement you could take. I found this on one website though:

Are there any techniques I can try myself at home to get my labor going?

No do-it-yourself methods have been proven consistently to be both safe and effective. Here's the scoop on some of the techniques you may have heard about:

• Nipple stimulation: Twisting or pinching your nipples releases your own natural oxytocin. A few studies have found it to be effective in getting labor going within 72 hours if your cervix is already ripe, but the method has not been well studied. And don't try it at home: Nipple stimulation requires monitoring because it can sometimes cause prolonged contractions that could stress your baby and depress his heart rate.

• Sexual intercourse: Semen contains some prostaglandin and having an orgasm may stimulate a few contractions, but having sex won't induce labor.

• Castor oil: Castor oil is a strong laxative, and stimulating your bowels may cause some contractions, but no good studies have proven it consistently effective, and you're likely to find the effect on your gut very unpleasant.

• Herbal remedies. A variety of herbs are touted as useful for labor induction. Some are risky because they can hyperstimulate your uterus (and may be unsafe for your baby for other reasons as well), and the safety and effectiveness of others remains unproven.

Good luck, healthy baby and try and stock some sleep!!
Reply:Whatever you try do not try castor oil. My friend tried that and all she acomplished was a bad case of diarhea. It cleaned her out really good but didn't help with speeding up delivery. Walking is always good if nothing else it get your exersise. Also the spicy theory doesn't help, I tried that one and it didn't do anything. The main thing is that baby is gonna come when he's good and ready. Be careful with any method you try and make sure it won't harm you or baby. Good luck and congrats!

Has anyone ever used evening primrose oil at the end of their pregnancy?

With my first child I went a week past due date and my cervix never ripend on it's own and they didn't ripen cervix before inducing. I endured 24 hours of hard labor. I was told that evening primrose oil could not only ripen cervix but bring on labor. I'm now past 38 weeks and the doctor says the baby is ready to thrive outside the womb so it would be safe for me to go into labor any time now. I've been doing alot of walking but can't have sex cause the father is overseas and won't be back for a long time. I've read up on primrose oil but am unsure how to take it. Some things say take orally but others say vaginally. How did you take it and did it work?

Has anyone ever used evening primrose oil at the end of their pregnancy?
I used it with my first pregnancy because my child was three weeks late. I applied the oil directly to my cervix. I'm not really sure if it worked or not. Another thing that I did try was Red Raspberry Leaf tea. You can find it at most health food stores. It doesn't taste bad either with a little sugar or honey. Just sip on it as much as you can.
Reply:I tried that and everything under the sun...nothing will work untill that baby is ready to make his/her entrance. I know it is hard and can be miserable...HOLD ON!!! Good Luck!

Some doctors will "strip" your cervix for you.. They will insert a finger and gently try to detatch the "sac" from your cervix. It hurts a bit and I had some cramping ....My friend had it done with both pregnancies and she went inot labor BOTH times within 24 hours !!!
Reply:see at 40 weeks they might give you something my dr did it was a string they put in me and it but my right in to labor
Reply:I took it with my 2nd baby and I think it did help. My 1st was almost 3 weeks late #2 was one day late. At this stage you can do both it won't hurt you but vaginally will give you more benifits.

Can I take Lactobacillus acidophilus and evening primrose at the same time with my prescriptions?

I take Pentasa and Azathioprine for my Chron's Disease, but I want to take acidophilus and evening primrose as well to help in a more natural way and eventually to not take prescriptions at all. Can I take all these pills at the same time or will it cause a bad reaction?

Can I take Lactobacillus acidophilus and evening primrose at the same time with my prescriptions?
Both of these should not be a problem to take with your medication - you should definitely monitor your intake of the primrose oil as too much can cause abdominal pain or headache. See below for info

Although as mentioned previously you should speak to someone educated in the field RHNC/RNC/naturopath etc. to help you get on a program to help you with the Chron's disease naturally. A pharmacist may/may not be able to answer your question correctly; pharmacists go to school to learn about drugs not nutritional supplements.

Reply:You never know since they are not FDA regulated. It would take years and years for them to test everyone prescription with every herbal supplement.

I would talk with your doctor, although he might say the same thing it is better to be safe then sorry!
Reply:The Acidophilus should be fine its just like eating some yogurt. I'm not sure about the evening primrose. I suggest checking out some information from the web, finding out what the primrose has in it that gives it it's beneficial qualities. If you can't find it there talk to a holistic practitioner and ask your doctor. Heck do all of these. It is helpful to ask the advice of someone who uses herbal therapy as a profession, since they have already done the research on the active properties of these herbs. Good luck, and good health to you! Blessed Be!
Reply:Your pharmacist will be able to tell you. Call the number on your prescription bottle.

Can you apply evening primrose oil directly onto skin?

If I was to break an evening primrose oil capsule, could I apply the liquid onto my skin? What adverse reaction would you recieve if any?

Can you apply evening primrose oil directly onto skin?
I have EPO prescribed for exczema, and sometimes pierce capsule to use oil directly onto my skin - with no adverse effects. The only trouble is it doesn't smell very nice, and is quite greasy. However,if you are careful not to slip, you can pierce capsulesandsquirt them into the bath - works quite well I find
Reply:why the heck would you want to breaking a capsule is a bit much get a lotion
Reply:It is usually swallowed, and oils that can be ingested are also safe for applying to the skin. If you can tolerate swallowing it (that is you are not allergic to it) I would expect that you will not experience any adverse reactions.
Reply:Sure, you can. You may not get as much benefit of it unless you are trying to help one small spot of skin (at least compared to taking it internally).

The GLA (gamma- linoleic acid) in the Evening Primrose Oil is the part that actually gives the benefit and the skin doesn't absorb oils as well as your stomach would (short of any digestive problems), so just swallowing the softgel would be much more effective in this case for most people.

If you wanted the skin health benefits of the GLA on one particular area of skin (if it was heavily damaged, for example), you could open the softgel and pour it on.... but it's seldom people would use GLA for that (Vitamin E or Aloe Vera work better for that).

In regards to bolavo, creams are a cosmetic grade product that actually has a rather low dose of nutrients when compared to a softgel. The primary reason is so someone doesn't accidentally overdose by using too much cream.
Reply:The question IS... what sort of result do you expect? It shouldn't hurt you... unless of course you're highly allergic.
Reply:yes u can
Reply:It will do you no harm

How long do you have to wait for Evening Primrose to take effect?

I'm 37 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I've not dilated and my cervix has not ripened. Has anyone else tried the Evening Primrose? What happened?

Reply:I tried everything when I ws prego and I mean everything nothing worked not even the drs drugs in the hospital they ended up having to give me an emergency c-section because of it
Reply:Evening Primrose Oil is not designed to induce labor. It just helps soften and ripen your cervix. When I was 34 weeks, I was not effaced or dialated AT ALL. After that appointment, I used 1 capsule twice daily vaginally and 1 capsule twice daily orally. At 36 weeks I was then 80% effaced. I then increased it to two capsules twice daily orally and vaginally. At 38 weeks I was then dialated to 2cm. After that I increased it to three times daily, and now (I am due tomorrow) I am 95% effaced, but still the same dialation. I have an induction scheduled for next week, and my OB/GYN says that because of using the oil, my cervix should dialate more quickly once active labor begins.

Can a pregnant woman in her second month take Primrose tablets?

Is it advisable for a 2 months pregnant woman to take primrose tablets%26gt;%26gt;? Of what benefit is it to the mother and child?

Can a pregnant woman in her second month take Primrose tablets?
Evening Primrose Oil acts as a prostaglandin, which ripens or softens the cervix. It's also useful for softening scar tissue from abortions or IUD damage. This will soften/ripen the cervical tissues and increase the flexibility of the pelvic ligaments. This will help the baby to deeply engage in the pelvis. This early application of the baby's head will assist with dilation and should result in a relatively easy birth, even after multiple C-sections for "stalled" labor. Evening Primrose Oil may be helpful for women with borderline pelvises as well. The utilization of Evening Primrose Oil seems to enhance the complex set of biochemical messages that initiate labor.

You can take evening primrose oil, orally, in the last four weeks of your pregnancy. You should take three evening primrose oil capsules daily for the first week (36th week of gestation) and then one to two capsules a day for the last three weeks of pregnancy.

It is used to induce labor and is not recommended early in pregnancy.

How do you care for a primrose?

I just bought a potted primrose and I dont know if it is doing too well... What are it's needs?! I do not have a green thumb but want it to live! I water it every other day and keep it in the sunlight.

How do you care for a primrose?
I've never grown one as a houseplant - But my outside ones are in a shady spot.

I suspect it want bright, but INDIRECT light as a houseplant. Try to keep it out of direct sun, or put a sheer between the sun and your plant.

They also prefer it cool. 50-60F. Place a tray of rocks and water nearby (or under - without having the bottom of the pot IN water) to increase the humidity around the plant if the temps are higher than 60.

What to plant with a Primrose tree in a semi-circular garden of about 16' x 4"?

This garden is in my back yard. A couple years ago, I uprooted everything to make room for this primrose tree that my children gave me for Mother's Day. But, it looks a bit lonely. Can anyone recommend some perennials or shrubs to put with it?

go to lowes if you have one near you..and buy some periannals that will spread over time and continue to come back..you can get butter fly bushes.. i have no clue what any of the names are...but get colors that you like..i do know phlox is a great low growing green and pink or purpe or white flowering ground cover that is fairly hearty...thats what i did when i filled my flower beds last year..and i love marigolds so i always buy some of those..

Primrose...?

Ok...so I have a primrose that actually came back from last year...the first time ever I have had one that hasn't died off.

Should I trim the dead leaves and such from it now, or let it go for a while until it warms up for good? It is already blooming and I don't want to bother it too much as I have never had good luck with them in the past.

Primrose...?
yes...you should remove any dead material.
