What does it actually do? Is it just for PMT or does it have other properties ? Hearing a bit bout it lately. Is starflower oil similar?

Evening primrose oil has been used with successful results in women with PMS.
Diabetes:
Evening primrose oil may be effective treatment for diabetic neuropathy, which involves pain and/or numbness due to nerve damage.
Heart and Cholesterol:
Evening primrose oil has been shown to lower high serum cholesterol levels. Dietary supplementation with evening primrose oil has also been shown to reduce platelet aggregation (blood clotting) in those fed a normal or high fat diet.
Blood Pressure:
Studies have shown that GLA from evening primrose oil significantly reduces blood pressure and may also inhibit the development of Hypertension.
Multiple sclerosis:
Evening primrose oil is routinely used by Multiple sclerosis sufferers. The unusual pattern of fatty acids found in the brain of MS sufferers may return to normal within a few months of taking EPO.
Reply:it is most commonly used for p.m.t and can help accociated breast pain when its your time of month . It can also be taken to help ease arthritis and if used as a cream can help eczma.
Reply:Evening primrose, or its active ingredient gamolenic acid, has been claimed to cure or improve pretty much everything over the years.
A big metanalysis ( study that looks at all the existing studies ) about 10 years ago, looked at this in detail. It only showed one area where it consistently was better than placebo, ( though not by a huge margin,) and that was in cyclic mastalgia, ( monthly breast pain.) For PMT itself it was no better than placebo.
Despite this sometimes useful effect, it was blacklisted and can no longer be prescribed on the NHS as the effect was marginal and most GP prescriptions for it turned out to be for problems that it actually had no effect on!

Reply:Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge England, recommend for reducing the incidence of breast cysts, they give an info sheet out at the breast clinic.
It is also used for reducing hot flushes....
