I am 38 weeks pregnant. My doctor told me to use Primrose Oil to help soften my cervix, can I take it orally?

Everything I read says to rub the oils on my cervix or insert the pill vaginally before I go to bed. I am not comfortable doing that. Can I just orally take the pill, to have the same effect? Does it work?

You can take it orally, but it won't be as effective. Applying the oil directly to the cervix does more and is quicker.
Reply:My midwife told me to start doing this just last week. Yes you can take them orally. She told me to take 2(500mg) orally. One in the morning and one at night with a meal. She also told me to insert one in my vagina at night just because it works directly on the cervix. If you do not feel comfortable doing this I think taking them orally would be fine. It may not be as effective but it definately won't hurt anything.
Reply:I think its supposed to be used topically, not orally. I've never heard of taking orally in order to open a cervix.
Reply:i dont know...but my dr. told me not to mess with anything that can possibly induce you. she said to just sit tight cause the baby will come when he/she is ready.
Reply:If you were to take it orally you should have been doing it since 34 weeks. It's really not going to do anything to you if taken orally at this point. The best thing to do is insert it vaginally before you go to bed and it will dissolve completely by the time you wake up the first time to pee.
Reply:i NEVER HEARD OF THAT SORRY BUT I HAD 4 CHILDREN AND I THOUGHT THEY DO THAT IN THE HOSPITAL . SORRY BUT GOOD LUCK.
Reply:Yes it will still work, just not as well. You know your body, do what your most comfortable with.
Reply:I bought the oral Primrose Oil pills, and took them for 3 weeks to no avail. Not to say that it won't work for anyone- everyone is different! I wasn't told about the insertion form, or I would have tried that! Anyways, I hope that the oral pills work for you- good luck and congratulations!!
