I am 38 weeks pregnant, attempting a V-BAC soon, and have read numerous places that Evening Primorose Oil can be taken 2x a day to help ripen/soften the cervix in preparation for labor. I was just wondering if anyone has tried this and what was your experience like?
Evening Primrose Oil for pregnant women?
You shouldn't use EPO until your due date or the week before until your doc or midwife suggests otherwise. If you do use it, you can use it orally or vaginally. There is more information available here: http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/nati...
I was not VBAC, but I went to 42 weeks with my second pregnancy and was threatened with medical induction. I was scheduled on Friday to be induced the following Tuesday.
That same Friday, I started taking EPO orally 3x/day and also inserting two capsules vaginally at night. Monday morning I saw my midwife who said my cervix was much softer and starting to dilate. She did a membrane sweep using EPO and I went into labor that night. It was an easy and fast labor, too, lasting only about 5 hours.
Good luck with your VBAC!
Reply:I just posted about not taking it while pregnant. However this is because I have read not to take it while pregnant. Since thier is such conflicting answers about, I think you should call your local health food store and or local doctor that has some knowledge in natural medicines. if you are un able to find anybody to talk to, her is a lady that is amazing!!! She is local to me and I buy all my medicines from her husbands health food store. She is a doctor. There is a link on the site where you can contact them Best wishes hun!

Reply:Although evening primrose oil is the remedy most commonly used by midwives, it is unclear whether this substance can ripen the cervix or induce labor. I would steer clear of any type of remedies because there is just not enough research done and them and its better to be safe than sorry. If you are concerned because you don't want another c-section, there is something that your Dr or midwife can do to get the cervix ready. Ask your Dr about ripen your cervix by inserting medication that contains prostaglandins into your vagina and this could even get your labor started. Good luck!

Reply:I tried evening primrose oil with my first and it did help to thin my cervix. Within 72 hours my water broke and I was in labor. Having sex also helps.
